A joint ISO/IEC technical committee is currently working towards a unified machinery safety standard to replace ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061. Meanwhile, the VDMA in Germany has proposed a file structure for component safety data that could help in merging the two existing standards. IEC 62061 and ISO 13849-1 (under revision) specify requirements for the design and implementation of safety-related control systems of machinery. The use of either of these standards, in accordance with their scopes, can be presumed to fulfil the relevant essential safety requirements. Table 1 summarises the scopes of IEC 62061 and ISO 13849-1 This report shall be considered as an complement to the standard EN ISO 13849-1:2008 that gives examples on how different requirements can be interpreted.

This standard was greatly revised in November 2006. This revision has caused major changes in the fundamentals of safety system design.
